Trattoria il Cortile history
In the hamlet of Borgo San Giuseppe, alongside the “Chiesa Rossa” (Red Church) there is a small alleyway called Borgo Paglia where since the beginning of the last century, at the heart of the old houses, permeated from this gracious house the smells and scents of times gone by.
Today this house contains a restaurant Il Cortile. In the past it was the inn Dal Campanar, which once served for the delivery of post and as a refuge for travellers offering rooms and a hay loft on the upstairs floor all of which dates from the times of the Duchess Maria Luigia. More recently the inn was run for nearly forty years by Signora Esterina. Entering this old inn via a modest door you find yourself in a dimly lit room in which only in the summer time would the air and light make its way in, with other rooms which opened off to the courtyard with a lateral roof.
It was an inn in the old style where they ate tripe and a few other local typical dishes, drinking simple local wine and where they played cards. Today thanks to the passion and dedication of Mauro and Maria, it is a restaurant that not only offers traditional dishes, but also a creative reworked cuisine still using local produce without losing that magical spirit of the old inn as it must have been in the past.
